Passing on a Legacy to Her Alma Mater

Born in 1917, Ruth Juvet Glaser Stone lived a long happy life full of adventure, family and fun. And she never forgot her educational family at Mayville State or the students she taught. Ruth was a positive and adventurous woman with a strong faith in God. Her faith, family and friends were the most important things in her life. She had hoped to live to be 100 and she almost made it to 99.

When she was very young Ruth's family moved to Mayville where her brother Raymond and sister Lorraine were born. She went to school in Mayville and was Valedictorian of her class, graduating high school in 1935.

Following graduation she attended college in Mayville, graduating with a teaching degree in 1939. Upon graduating she was hired to teach High School English in Hankinson, ND. Through the years she has stayed in close touch with many of these students and in 2005 her niece Pat accompanied her to the 65th class reunion of these students.

After the second World War she moved to Seattle where her brother Ray and his wife June Juvet lived. During her years in Seattle she taught school and she also worked for the Personnel Dept. at Boeing. At this time one of her favorite activities was mountain climbing and she was a member of the Seattle Mountaineers Club. She also loved tennis, skiing and boating. While at Boeing she met and married Dr. William Stone, a mathematics professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR. They made their home in Corvallis and she so enjoyed the academic life of the university.

The highlight of her life was when she and Bill adopted two beautiful little girls (sisters from Morocco Taylor and Karen). Bill passed away after 16 years of marriage in 1976.

In 1988 she married Ray Glaser in Bellingham, WA Ray and Bill had worked together at Boeing and Ruth originally met Ray at this time. Ruth settled easily into her new life in Bellingham and became active in her church, Christ the Servant Lutheran, AAUW and many other social activities. She made many wonderful friends during these years.

Ray passed away in 2004 and in 2014 Ruth moved to Chandlers Square in Anacortes to be near her niece and family.

She was an avid reader, always interested in health, nutrition and children's issues. She so enjoyed the symphony, ballet and classical music. She loved to travel and took trips to Norway to visit her father's relatives, a Mozart cruise in Europe, a year in Austria, other trips to Europe and many cruises. In 2014 when she was 97 she and her niece Stephanie returned to Mayville, ND to visit her sister, Lorraine and family and to attend the 125th year celebration of her college. It had been 75 years since she had graduated.

Mayville State was so special to Ruth that she decided to leave a very special legacy to her alma mater. During 2016, after Ruth's passing in May, Mayville State University Foundation was notified by Ruth's attorney that a gift had been planned for Mayville State to help the young students there and support the good work of the university. Over $11,000 was given as a general gift of support. These kinds of gifts are so important because they support the foundation in its work to raise more funds to help with scholarships and programs. In 2016, the foundation was able to invest that special gift to raise an additional $303,820 for scholarships. We think Ruth would have loved to know her gift was multiplied to help so many!
